The University of Tampa presents its free, week-long Lectores series, spotlighting writers who have left an indelible imprint on our modern literary consciousness.

It all kicks off with poets Erika Meitner and Mary Biddenger tonight at 7 p.m. Novelist Robert Olen Butler will speak and sign books on Saturday. Monday brings singer-songwriters Joe Pernice and Wesley Stace, and on Thursday, we get a visit from cult film icon Hal Hartley (pictured), famed director of Henry Fool. His film Trust will be shown in a free Tampa Theatre screening on Sun., Jan. 5, at 9 p.m.

Regarding Hartley: “We wanted to bring in a filmmaker who had as much a distinct voice as a well-known novelist,” said Steve Kistulentz, PhD., director of UT’s MFA program in creative writing. “Since so much of what Hal does on screen depends on wordplay, and the ways in which characters not only talk to one another but around each other as well, we thought he would be a natural fit.” Hartley’s Jan. 9 appearance includes a showing of his 2012 featurette Meanwhile followed by a Q&A session.

All events except Saturday’s Butler appearance begin at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 3-10 at the Falk Theatre, 428 W. Kennedy Blvd. Butler will appear 7:30 p.m. at UT’s Vaughn Center. Click here for more details about each UT Lectores event.
