Joe Maddon Mr. Potato Head, you are mine

Back in the rosy days of early spring, baseball prognosticators saw not just a bright future for the Rays in 2014, but an American League East-winning future.

Then the season happened.

However, it’s still early. Pitchers will return from the disabled list.  Ben Zobrist’s thumb will heal. Someone — please, anyone — will have a hitting streak.

And there’s always the bobbleheads.

Tampa Bay fans may not be filling the Trop, but it’s not for want of effort by the team’s marketing department. They have once again come up with a roster of promotional items and special events that verge on irresistible.

I mean, how can you not want a Joe Maddon Mr. Potato Head? Or a Solar-Powered Waving DJ Kitty followed by a concert with The Wiggles?

OK, you may not be a Wiggler, but you know a kid who is. And then there’s the music series for grownup fans, with attractions this year including Weezer, The O’Jays, and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts.

Here’s a rundown of some of the more appealing giveaways and concerts. Note that every Sunday afternoon home game is a Family Fun Day, with stiltwalkers and balloon artists and all kinds of free activities for kids, including Topps Make Your Own Baseball Card, Grand Slam Alley and, after the game, a chance to run the bases.

Because if seeing 4-year-olds in baseball gear stumbling joyfully down the base paths isn’t enough to boost your sagging team spirit, nothing will.
