We know that Tea Party types (as well as some progressive Democrats) are extremely unhappy about Florida adopting the Common Core education standards. But Representative Charles Van Zant (R-Palatka) has taken it to a whole new level, courtesy of video procured from the liberal blog Think Progress.
Speaking at the “Operation Education Conference” in Orlando in April, Van Zant warned that officials implementing Common Core in Florida are “promoting as hard as they can any youth that is interested in the LGBT agenda.” He went on to say that they want "to attract every one of your children to become as homosexual as they possibly can.” He then apologized to the crowd for having to be the bearer of bad news. “I really hate to bring you that news,” the GOP House member said, “but you need to know.”
In response, Florida Democratic Party Chair Allison Tant is calling on Rick Scott to condemn Van Zant's remarks.
“These bigoted and outrageous remarks should have no place in Florida politics. All of Florida’s children have the right to grow up, go to school, and earn an education without fear of being judged for who they are. Anti-gay bullying has no place in the classroom, let alone in the Florida House."
“Rick Scott has a duty to all of Florida’s children to make it clear that they can go to school without fear of being bullied. Rick Scott and the Republican House leadership must condemn these hateful remarks."
