On The Road: Highwaymen from Three Collectors

When: Jan. 11-Feb. 2 2013

Highwaymen paintings are a favorite among art lovers. They convey a wistful beauty, conjuring fantasy settings out of reach — and at the same time — a romanticized view of our own Florida landscape, as interpreted by prison workers and others at makeshift roadside galleries. DFAC's exhibit opening reception for the stunning paintings takes place in conjunction with downtown Dunedin’s Second Friday Art & Wine Walk. Peruse 26 historic African-American Highwaymen artists represented in three individual collections. On Sat., Jan. 19, the downtown Artist’s Studios and Gallery (home to DFAC’s Stirling Campus) presents real-life Highwaymen R. A. “Roy” McLendon and Isaac Knight, whose work is pictured here. Both artists will be on hand from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to meet the public and talk about their paintings.
