Ron White

When: Sat., Jan. 26, 7 & 9:30 p.m. 2013

What: We often don’t explore entertainment that target subcultures other than our own — and sometimes, we are missing out. Such is the case if we have systematically avoided anyone who tours with Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy. Enter Ron White. White is an excellent storyteller —sort of a foul-mouthed, alcoholic good-old-boy version of Bill Cosby. Like Cosby, he is incredibly likable. And, perhaps most enticingly, White’s social critique doesn’t pander. Despite the makeup of his core audience, he boldly confronts homophobia: “Isn’t that the most useless thing you could possibly be is afraid of gay people? … We’re all gay. It’s just to what extent are you gay.” Check out his story about “Tater Salad” on YouTube if you haven’t seen it. The slang name of the picnic side dish is also his official criminal alias. 7 and 9:30 p.m. —Kent Roberts
