The Glass Menagerie

When: Thursdays, 7:30 p.m., Fridays-Sundays, 8 p.m. and Sundays, 3 p.m. Continues through Jan. 27 2013

The CL Best of the Bay 2012 winner for Best New Theatre Company presents Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie. The production stars Emilia Sargent as Amanda, also a BoTB winner — named Best Actress for her formidable turn as Blanche in TampaRep’s Summer 2012 production of A Streetcar Named Desire. Jon Gennari co-stars as the protagonist and teller of the tale, Tom (Williams' real first name, incidentally, is Thomas); Maggie Mularz is Tom’s troubled sister, Laura; and Daniel Rosenstrauch plays Jim, the “gentleman caller." The production is another promising offering from Tampa Repertory, who's steadfastly brought local theater audiences noteworthy productions of classics from the American canon. The drama deals with familial and passionate love, mental fragility and alienation is semi-autobiographical with aspects of Tom and Laura based on Williams himself, with references to the playwright's introversion and obsessive focus on his writing. The audience comes out of Menagerie understanding even more about Williams’ mommy issues through the regretful and overbearing Amanda. —Julie Garisto
